January is Radon month

Buyer and Seller beware - Radon is a colorless, ordorless gas that you won't know you have unless you test!

Radon is commonly high in Durango, Bayfield, Southwest Colorado in general. I always recommend my Buyers test for it and ask for it to be mitigated if it comes back high, as it is the #1 cause of lung cancer in NON-SMOKERS. More info from our local health department, San Juan Basin Health HERE: https://sjbpublichealth.org/radon/

The EPA has a lot to say about as well, and offers this booklet geared toward home buyers and sellers: https://www.epa.gov/radon/home-buyers-and-sellers-guide-radon
There are some local workshops around La Plata County this month:

SJBPH and CSU Extension will hold free radon testing workshops as part of National Radon Action Month:

  • January 17th, 6 PM, Archuleta County Extension Office, 344 US Highway 84, Pagosa Springs
  • January 18th, 11 AM, SJBPH Durango Office, Larkspur Training Room, 281 Sawyer Drive, Durango
  • January 24th, 10 AM, Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive, Bayfield
  • January 29th, 10 AM, Archuleta County Extension Office, 344 US Highway 84, Pagosa Springs
  • January 31st, 5:30 PM, SJBPH Durango Office, Larkspur Training Room, 281 Sawyer Drive, Durango

Attending a workshop gets you as many free short-term radon test kits as you need and the confidence to use them correctly. Please pre-register for a workshop by emailing your name and address to eh@sjbpublichealth.org.

And as always, I am just a phone call or email away if you want to talk about Radon or anything else concerning your home health and resale value.

With gratitude,
Gayle
